How will the boy save his beautiful flowers and get back to his classmates?įield Trip to Volcano Island is an incredible, wordless adventure. The boy is alone at the bottom of the volcano. He retrieves his flowers, but now he’s stuck. When a strong wind blows his flowers into the crater, the boy goes after them. He collects the flowers while trailing behind his classmates. Upon arrival, the class discovers a crater of boiling lava and an active geyser. A class leaves their floating, self-sustaining school on a helicopter. The wordless story takes place in the future. “Someday you’ll have to be king! Then you can sit in the throne room and tell the dragons to be nice and neat.” When Daniel wants to find the dragons and tell them to clean up their mess, Papa explains that only the king can do that. Dragons are responsible for the disaster. Mama and Papa entertain Daniel’s question with an imaginative explanation. He asks why his parents have to clean up after other people. Daniel wonders who leaves the place so messy. But work is waiting for them inside.ĭaniel’s parents begin picking up the paper that’s strewn about the floor. The office building looks dark and foreboding at night. Daniel must wake up and go to work with them. Aunt Clara calls to say she can’t watch Daniel that night. His mother cooks at the stove while his father reads nearby.
The Paper Kingdom opens with Daniel sleeping in a one room apartment. In The Paper Kingdom, Daniel’s parents are night janitors at an office building. Not all families settle in at night and go to sleep.
